Select Board interviews five fire chief candidates

Sterling Select Board conducts fire chief candidate interviews. Chair Kirsten Newman presided as the board met with five candidates for the position: Mark Sadowski, currently chief in West Boylston; Erik Thomas, retiring chief in Atkinson, New Hampshire; Kevin Grebinar, a Sterling resident and call member with management experience; Thomas Kokernak, a 38-year veteran of the Sterling department with 24 years as lieutenant; and Timothy Shea, current Deputy Chief in Devens with 31 years of firefighting experience. The board announced it will make its final decision at the January 14, 2026 Select Board meeting.
